Sunday September 10 approx 1700 EDT - Irma has dropped to a cat 2 hurricane. This is quite a relief as the storm surge will be reduced and wind is lower leading to less damage.
In Kissimmee we have had rain all last night and all day today, sometimes quite heavy. Wind is minimal, barely a light breeze right now (1743 EDT). Having said that the wind has just picked up and the rain has gotten heavier.
There is a curfew in place from 1900 today til 1800 tomorrow, for obvious reasons. It is too dangerous driving in these conditions
As Irma moves up the West (Gulf) coast of Florida storm surge is causing damage as well as the wind. Imagine a wall of water 10' high being pushed along. Ain't nothing much gonna stop that. Storm surge causes drowning, the highest cause of death in these circumstances.
As the hurricane passes, it can suck water out of marinas, freshwater can fill it up (rain and flood water), then afterwards the storm surge fills it back up with salt water.
Currently 2.3 million without power in Florida and Irma has not travelled far.
70,000 people in shelters
