About me

After seeing many alerts and emailing them to frends I decided it would be easier to set up a website with all this info on. All in one place, not clogging up everyone's inbox. I will try to keep it simple and easy to understand, because there is nothing worse than a website that is complex, difficult to understand and search.

If there is anything you would like to see on here, or anything you would like me to research let me know. Email me at dragonnefyre at g m x dot c o dot u k.

I am using vim (VI Improved) to write these webpages. You can download it for free at vim.org It is a text editor with many features but quite easy to use. It was originally for Linux (and Unix as vi), but has now been ported to other OS's, including Windows. It includes syntax checking so is useful for programmers

IMPORTANT NOTE : Got a mobile phone? Want to make sure it is useless to anyone who steals it? Type in *#06# and you will see a number displayed on the screen. Make a note of it. If your phone is lost or stolen then you can contact your provider, give them this number and they will disable the phone. Even if the SIM card is changed the handset is still useless.

For all of you out there who insist on using Windows, why not visit Gibson Research. There is plenty to read on their website about Windows security and some good tools for testing how (in)secure your PC is:)

There is also a website called Insecure.org This supplies a tool called NMAP Security scanner which is very useful. It will scan the ports you specify on the machine you specify (by IP Address) and tell you what it finds, eg ports open and any other info like operating system.

As for browsing I use a variety of browsers. One I use is opera. It is an excellent browser. It is currently at version 10.10.

I also use Mozilla. This is a good browser as well and does show some sites well that Opera doesn't. That's what you get for having a company out there that insists on having it's own standards instead of sticking to everyone else's. And we all know who that is!

If your ISPs DNS servers aren't performing like they should how about switching to OpenDNS's DNS servers?OpenDNS. To save you time, here are the DNS server settings - 208.67.222.22 and 208.67.220.220. Make them your DNS servers. Need help - Linux, edit /etc/resolv.conf so the nameserver lines look like this :

nameserver 208.67.222.222

nameserver 208.67.220.220

Windows - that's longer to explain. I will add that shortly.

Here are the links to various pages. Their names may change in the near future as I make changes and add more pages.
